Sunderland will look to maintain pressure on the top three clubs in the Championship as they welcome lower-half side Cardiff in a matchday 36 meeting. This match on Saturday at the Stadium of Light between the fourth-placed Black Cats and the 21st-placed Bluebirds comes with our prediction of a home win.
With 65 points, Sunderland are eight points behind the automatic promotion places, but 12 points ahead of the teams below them. Cardiff are five points above the relegation zone, although only goal difference separates them from the two teams above.
A 2-1 away win at Sheffield Wednesday last Friday was a welcome relief for Sunderland, who lost two matches in a row prior. With the top three clubs in irresistible form, it is imperative that Sunderland keeps winning to have any hopes of moving up the ladder.
Cardiff will also look to move up the ladder, as they sit just above the bottom three clubs. Five points is the buffer after a 2-1 home loss to Burnley on Tuesday. That was their third defeat in six recent league games, winning only once in that sequence. The away form is equally dire, if not worse, as they won only one away game all season, although they drew nine of 17 trips.

Our Sunderland vs Cardiff Prediction
Sunderland bounced back from a pair of defeats to allay any fears of losing momentum. The Black Cats have a healthy lead of 12 points over the chasing pack while being eight points off the pace in the direct promotion race. They would be gunning for a win here to continue their winning momentum. Cardiff haven’t quite taken flight in recent weeks, dragging them closer to the relegation zone. A five-point buffer is still healthy, but unless their away form improves, that could evaporate quickly. That’s why our Sunderland vs Cardiff prediction is Sunderland wins the match.
