To say this has been a disappointing season for Stuttgart would be an understatement. The club finished just short of a Europa League qualifying spot last term, but the 2018/19 campaign has seen their season extended in a less than desirable way. They will contest the Bundesliga Playoffs against Union Berlin to determine which team will play their trade in the topflight next season, so the pressure is one for the underperforming hosts here. Stuttgart may have finished four points shy of safety this season, but there’s no doubt that things could have been a lot worse were it not for new manager Nico Willig. The interim boss has guided them to two wins and a draw in their final four games of the season, putting a seven-point buffer between them and the automatic relegation spots. This newfound confidence hugely boosts their chances of succeeding in the playoffs too. They are unbeaten at home under Willig, and the temporary boss has guided Stuttgart to 29% of their overall Bundesliga wins this season, despite only being in charge for 12% of the campaign. Union Berlin aren’t a bad side by any means, but they will be feeling a bit low on confidence at the moment. They were bitterly disappointed to miss out on automatic promotion, despite coming from two goals behind to clinch a point on the final day of the Bundesliga 2 season. Paderborn pipped them to the post on goal difference, and that sort of crushing blow takes a while to wear off. Admittedly, the visitors have been very difficult to beat over the last nine months or so, but away from home their performances do deteriorate somewhat. They have won just two of their last 13 away games in the league, and they have lost four of their last nine on the road too.
