Matchday two in the Belgian First Division A will see Standard Liege take on Union Saint-Gilloise on Friday evening. The hosts are third-from-bottom of the table in the early stages, having lost their opening league match 1-0 to Sint-Truiden last week. Last season, they finished sixth in the regular season but were overtaken by Cercle Brugge in the Conference League playoff group. Standard recorded 16 wins, nine draws, and 15 losses in their 40 matches last season. However, they ended the campaign very poorly, winless in their final seven matches with five losses and two draws. The hosts did beat this opponent 4-2 in their last encounter back in February and will need a similar type of performance to register their first points of the season. 

Meanwhile, after finishing the regular season in second place and level on points with Genk, Union Saint-Gilloise could not maintain their form in the Championship round. They lost their final match of the season to Club Brugge, which allowed Royal Antwerp to edge them to the title by a single point. Across the campaign, the visitors recorded 25 wins, eight draws, and seven losses, scoring 78 goals while conceding 49 in that time. They got this season off to a solid start, beating Anderlecht 2-0 last weekend, with Eckert Ayensa and Cameron Puertas scoring in each half. Union are currently second in the league after the first matchday and are one of only five sides that managed a win in their opening fixture. The visitors are the favourites coming into the match.
