Southampton had a good run at the end of 2019 and finished the year in 15th place and four points above the relegation zone. They host Tottenham on New Year's Day who start 2020 in sixth place in the Premier League. The Saints come into this game having earned seven points from their last three league games. That's taken them out of the bottom three but January sees them with a difficult fixture list. Southampton begin with this game against Tottenham but then have to go to Leicester before hosting Wolves. They might look safe now but that may well change in a few weeks. Home form had picked up for Southampton with a couple of wins but their last two at St Mary's have produced just a point against West Ham and Crystal Palace. Only two of their last 15 home league games haven't seen both teams score and this looks a game that should have goals scored in it.

Tottenham are in sixth and five points behind the final Champions League position. The weekend saw them draw 2-2 at Norwich City and they had to come from behind to earn that point. Spurs have only lost two of their eight league games played since Jose Mourinho took over as manager. Away form for Tottenham under Mourinho has produced two wins, a draw and a defeat in the Premier League. Those games have seen Spurs score eight goals and concede seven and each of those games have seen both teams score. That stat looks like coming up again in this game.
