The first semi-final of the 2026 ICC T20 World Cup will see South Africa taking on New Zealand at the iconic Eden Gardens in Kolkata on Wednesday afternoon. The winner of this match between the Proteas and the Black Caps will meet either India or England in the final. Check out our match prediction below!
South Africa have enjoyed a remarkable T20 World Cup campaign and are now widely considered the favourites for the title, despite India still showing up as the market leader with most bookies. The Proteas were beaten finalists in the 2024 edition and have never won the title in the shortest format of the game.
As is often the case in global tournaments, New Zealand have largely gone under the radar, but have once again got themselves into the business end of the competition. The Kiwis lost to Australia in the 2021 tournament final and are also aiming to win their first T20 World Cup crown. Let’s get into the key stats!

South Africa - New Zealand: Form Analysis
Despite being drawn in arguably the toughest group in the competition, South Africa stormed into the Super 8 with a perfect record, beating Afghanistan, Canada, New Zealand and the UAE.
The Proteas then asserted their dominance early, recording a statement victory over India in their opening match of the Super 8, before beating the West Indies and Zimbabwe fairly routinely.
The South Africans have now won eight and lost just two of their last 10 T20Is, which included a seven-wicket victory against this opponent in Ahmedabad during the group stage last month.
South Africa have won six of their last 10 T20Is against New Zealand!
Meanwhile, barring that loss to the Proteas in the group stage, New Zealand defeated Afghanistan, the UAE and Canada to finish second in Group D with a net run rate of 1.227.
After their first match of the Super 8 against Pakistan was washed out, the Black Caps beat Sri Lanka and lost to England. They qualified for the semis ahead of the Shaheens due to their better net run rate (1.390).
The Kiwis have won six and lost four of their last 10 T20Is. Notably, they beat this opponent in three consecutive T20Is during a one-off tournament, which also included Zimbabwe in July last year.

South Africa & New Zealand Squad Analysis
While Aiden Markram was dismissed cheaply in his last match, the skipper has been South Africa’s chief contributor with the bat, now third in the top run-scorer standings with 268 in seven innings.
The Proteas are the only team in the tournament with three players in the top-10 wicket taker standings heading into the semi-final - Lungi Ngidi (12), Corbin Bosch (11) and Marco Jansen (11).
Anrich Nortje, Kwena Maphaka and George Linde were all brought into the squad for the last match, but at least two of them will likely drop to the bench with Keshav Maharaj and Kagiso Rabada expected to come back in.
Tristan Stubbs has the best batting average (106.00) of the players still in the tournament!
New Zealand’s standout performer with the bat in this tournament has been Tim Seifert, who has scored 216 runs in six innings and ranks 10th overall in the leading run-scorer standings.
The Black Caps' bowling has received some criticism in this competition. Rachin Ravindra is their leading wicket-taker with nine wickets, followed by Matt Henry with seven scalps in as many games.
Notably, Henry returned to New Zealand for the birth of his second child. Jacob Duffy or Kyle Jamieson are the most likely to replace him if he is unable to return in time for this crucial fixture.

Our South Africa vs New Zealand Prediction
While New Zealand are a spot above South Africa in the T20I world rankings, they have not been entirely convincing in this competition, having already lost two games, including to this opponent by seven wickets in the group stage.
South Africa, on the other hand, have massively exceeded expectations in this World Cup, and the manner in which they dispatched India in the Super 8 has made them genuine contenders to go all the way. Our South Africa vs New Zealand prediction is South Africa wins.
