The long wait is over! The UEFA Euro U21 Championships get underway on Wednesday, with hosts Slovakia starting us off against Spain in Group A. A befitting kickoff this will be as the hosts hope to put a first dent on the joint record winners. See below our prediction for the match.

Slovakia are making a third appearance at this competition and a second as hosts. The first time they hosted it, they finished fourth, and it was Spain who beat them in the bronze match.

In 2017 they made a second appearance but couldn’t get past the group stage. In their final friendly before heading into the tournament, Slovakia drew 2-2 with Slovenia. They are now winless in five matches.

Spain are one of the experienced campaigners at this level. Here they come seeking a sixth European U21 title. They have appeared in six of the last seven finals and won three titles in that period and are rightly coming into this as favorites.

In nine meetings with Slovakia U21, Spain posted seven wins, a loss, and a draw. However, the title favorites haven't had an ideal run-up to the competition, with two straight losses to close their preps.

They fell 1-0 to Ukraine, having earlier been defeated 3-1 by Germany. Spain’s last five matches saw them win just once.
