Birmingham finished 18th in the Championship last season and will be gunning for a better season this time, as they start their campaign with an away game at Sheffield United. This going to be a whole new experience for Sheffield United, who finished bottom of the Premier League last season. Heading into their opening game of the campaign, the only notable transfer made at Sheffield is that of manager Slavisa Jokanovic. There are no new faces at the team as yet but also the team has managed to keep the core of the side that played in the Premier League last season. The only key departure has been John Lundstram. The Blades’ final preseason game, against Norwich was canceled but they had played two earlier, winning both – against Doncaster Rovers and Europa Point. Having beaten Burnley in their final league game last season, they head to this clash on a three-game winning streak, all with clean sheets. They had a fine run at home towards the end of last season and will want to build on, going into this game with six wins in 11 home matches. They will be hoping for a first win in five matches against Birmingham though three have ended in draws.

Birmingham have a number of new additions to the squad with Tahith Chong from Manchester United looking like a good capture. Chuks Aneke is also a good catch after his goal scoring heroics in League One with Charlton Athletic last season, and his previous working relationship with Lee Bowyer should work for the team too. However, from their preseason, Birmingham haven’t looked ready enough for the start of the season. They head here without a win in their final three preseason matches and they conceded eight goals in them. In their last six matches, Birmingham have one win, against Cheltenham Town, and four losses. Credit to them though, in the last five matches, they’ve only failed to score once – the 4-0 loss to West Bromwich Albion right ahead of this game.
