Serbia vs England Prediction & Betting Tips - Euro

by Ian John | in Euro Predictions

Sunday night sees pre-tournament favorites England kick off their Euro 2024 campaign against Serbia. Gareth Southgate's very talented squad are expected to do well in the tournament, and a win against a tricky Serbian team would be the perfect start.

Serbia manager Dragan Stojkovic will hope to engineer a surprise win against the Group C favorites. However, with games against Slovenia and Denmark still to come, he may feel more confident of picking up points in these two following fixtures.

It will certainly be an interesting game, with neither side in good form heading into the tournament.

Serbia - England: Form Analysis

England qualified comfortably from Group C in the Euro 2024 qualifying campaign, topping the group comfortably ahead of Italy and Ukraine. However, England has won just one of the previous five games since a 2-0 win over Malta at Wembley in November 2023.

There have been two defeats in that run, both coming at Wembley. A 1-0 defeat to Brazil was followed by a 2-2 draw with Belgium back in March. England did beat Bosnia & Herzegovina 3-0 at St James' Park, but on returning to Wembley, they were very poor, losing 1-0 to Iceland in their final warm-up game.

Consistency has been an issue for England, with the manager struggling to find a system that brings the best out of his most dynamic attacking players recently. That will need to change if they are to perform well in this tournament.

Serbia qualified for Euro 2024 after finishing second in Group G behind Hungary.

Serbia qualified for Euro 2024 after finishing second in Group G behind Hungary. They won half of their eight games, lost twice (both to Hungary), and drew twice. Their form of late, though, has been unimpressive, with two wins and two defeats in their last four games.

The Serbs were heavily beaten 4-0 by Russia in the first of their warm-up games in March and then followed that with a lackluster 1-0 win away to Cyprus. They then traveled to Austria where they lost 2-1 in early June before a much more impressive 3-0 away win over Sweden in their final preparation game.

Serbia would view getting anything from the game with England as an excellent start to their Euro 2024 campaign. They certainly have the quality in their squad to cause the Three Lions lots of problems if Southgate's team cannot find better form.

Serbia & England Squad Analysis

Gareth Southgate saw defensive lynchpin John Stones go down through illness in the week, but he should have fully recovered to take his place in the team for this game. With Harry Maguire not selected for the squad and Luke Shaw unfit, Kieran Trippier will likely continue at left back, with Kyle Walker on the other flank and Marc Guehi likely to partner Stones in defense.

Jude Bellingham will almost certainly start in a 4-2-3-1 formation. Skipper Harry Kane will be the focal point in attack. Trent Alexander-Arnold could be given the second midfield anchor role alongside Declan Rice, while Bukayo Saka, Phil Foden, Anthony Gordon, and Cole Palmer will battle it out for the two other spots in the attacking midfield trio.

Jude Bellingham will almost certainly start in a 4-2-3-1 formation.

Dragan Stojkovic prefers a 4-3-3 formation for his Serbia team and it is hard to see him making too many changes from the team that won impressively in Sweden.

Wideman Filip Kostic and skipper Dusan Tadic will likely return to the first eleven. They will be tasked with providing chances for dangerous striking duo Aleksandar Mitrovic and Dusan Vlahovic.

Fulham's Sasa Lukic and Al Hilal's Sergei Milinkovic-Savic will anchor the midfield for the Eagles.

Our Serbia vs England Prediction

With England and Serbia suffering from mixed form both leading into this tournament, and teams well aware of how important it is not to lose an opening game, this will probably be an even and at times, nervous contest.

Both teams are arguably better going forward than defending, and the defensive data suggests that we are likely to see goals at both ends in this Group C encounter. Our prediction for the England v Serbia is: both teams to score.

Serbia vs England - Other Interesting Predictions

Harry Kane (England) to score

England captain and record goalscorer Harry Kane will certainly want to be in amongst the goals in this tournament. England will need him to be if they are to go deep in Germany this summer. With England likely to create chances against the Serbian defense and having racked up 44 goals in 45 games for Bayern Munich this season, Kane is a good bet to get one, especially as England's elected penalty taker. Therefore our secondary prediction is for Harry Kane to score at any time.

Over 2.5 Goals to be Scored

In our primary prediction, we intimated that the data suggests both these teams can score goals, but are also likely to concede them, especially based on current form and their qualifying campaign.

With that in mind, and with a focus on the high-scoring results we have seen involving these teams in major tournaments of late, our final prediction for the England v Serbia Euro 2024 Group C clash is for over 2.5 goals to be scored in the match.
