An all-California contest for spring training on Monday as the Los Angeles Angels take on the San Francisco Giants. It is fair to say that given the talent of Mike Trout and Shohei Ohtani, the Angels have seriously underachieved over the last few seasons. Ohtani is now across town with the Dodgers and Trout has struggled to get through a season without injury. There is a serious opportunity for other players to step up given the chance and prove that they can help lead a team. Additions have been on the veteran side, stacking up the pitchers which has been a real weakness over the last couple of years. They have a young starting rotation with some promise for the future but they will have to kick on sooner rather than later. 

The Giants are coming off a disappointing 2023 just two years removed from an exceptional 107-55 season in 2021. Bob Melvin has taken over from Gabe Kapler as the manager, a legend in the Bay area after the job he did on a tiny budget as the manager of the Oakland Athletics from 2011-2021. Jorge Soler is a big signing at the DH position to add some well-needed pop to the lineup as they were struggling last season. Jordan Hicks has come over from the Toronto Blue Jays, one of the quickest pitchers in the business, he may well enjoy playing in this big ballpark. Perhaps their biggest signing is Jung-hoo Lee who comes over from Korea with a massive reputation. It might take him a while to settle in but he is a contact hitter who should get plenty of hits at the top of the order.
