Fourth placed Real Sociedad end a successful season with a home game against Sevilla. Sociedad have confirmed their Champions League place, while 11th placed Sevilla still have faint hopes of European confirmation. The home side lost at AtletIco Madrid on Sunday but Villarreal losing to Rayo Vallecano secured a top four finish for Sociedad. Now they finish their season with this home game and can’t finish any higher as they trail third placed Atletico by eight points. It was 2013/14 when Sociedad last played in the Champions League, so there are plenty of reasons to celebrate. The loss at the weekend ended a run of seven La Liga games without defeat. That impressive run included a home win over Real Madrid and winning at Barcelona. Home form this season has seen them win ten out of 18 La Liga matches with only three defeats. They are unbeaten in their last eight with five of the last six being won.

Sevilla no longer have to worry about qualifying for Europe via their finishing position in La Liga. Wednesday saw them win the Europa League with a penalty shootout victory over AS Roma. That takes them into the group stages of the Champions League next season. With that being the case and a fair few celebrations it’s unlikely they will be focussing too much on this final La Liga match of the season. Away league form has been inconsistent this season. There had been a run of eight without a win (with five losses) before winning four in a row. Last time out though they could only draw 1-1 at relegated Elche.
