The first leg of the Spanish Segunda division promotion playoff final will see Real Oviedo and Espanyol clash for a place in next season’s La Liga. This match at the Carlos Tartiere Stadium in Oviedo will be played on Sunday. Oviedo finished sixth in the regular season and was ahead of Racing Santander only on overall goal difference. They then brushed aside Eibar 2-0 on aggregate in the semi-finals, where they drew the first leg at home 0-0, before winning 2-0 on the road. That win makes it just their fourth across their last ten games, where they have lost four and drawn two. That isn’t exactly promotion-worthy form, but they have been impressive at this venue lately. Oviedo have lost just one of their last 19 home league games, winning 12 and drawing six.

Espanyol finished fourth in the regular season with 69 points, only three behind direct promotion. They narrowly brushed aside Sporting Gijon in the promotion play-off semi-final by a 1-0 aggregate. They won 1-0 away from home in the first leg, with the goal coming just before regulation time. That proved to be enough in the end, as they drew 0-0 in the second leg. Interestingly, both legs saw Espanyol end with ten men. What those two results have done is extend Espanyol’s impressive form, which has seen them unbeaten since early February. They have won seven and drawn 11 of their last 18 games, giving them a tight outlook. Whether that would help them here is anybody’s guess, but their recent away form suggests Espanyol will be hard to crack. They are unbeaten in nine away games, drawing six and winning three.
