Real Madrid haven't won La Liga since 2017 and could only finish third last season. They got this new season off to a good start when they won 3-1 at Celta Vigo. Real went 1-0 up in that season opener thanks to a goal by Benzema. Luca Modric was sent off early in the second half but the visitors continued to dominate the game running out 3-1 winners. It also ended a run of five away league games without a win. Home form last season included some memorable defeats but only one of their last six games ended in a loss.

Real Valladolid sruggled to stay in La Liga last season. The newly promoted side needed some good wins towards the end of the season and ended four points clear of the bottom three. They wlll have been delighted with their opening league game. Valladolid went to Real Betis and won the game 2-1. Their opponents played 82 minutes of the game with only ten men. It looked as if the game would end 1-1 but the visitors got the winner in the 89th minute. They lost 2-0 at Real Madrid last season and only had five away league wins with eight defeats.
