by Kennedy Kechula in Carabao Cup Predictions
Portsmouth and Millwall had late heartbreaks in their respective league matches on Saturday. They will be looking to straighten things up when they clash in the first round of the League Cup on Tuesday. Read on for our preview of the match and a prediction.
Portsmouth’s return to the Championship was minutes away from being a dream one as they traveled to Leeds United. However, after scoring a late goal that could have been the winner, they conceded almost immediately.
It ended 3-3 with the late drama seeing Leeds miss a big chance deep in added time. Aspects of Portsmouth’s game that came out clearly were their porosity in defence as well as sharpness in attack. Extending from last season, it seems increasingly difficult for Pompey to keep clean sheets. They also rarely fail to score, a quality they’ll want to carry here.
Millwall also conceded late to deny them at least a draw in their opening game. After impressively coming from 2-0 down to draw 2-2, they let in a stoppage time goal and lost 3-2 at home to Watford.
Duncan Watmore scored twice in the space of 12 minutes to give Millwall hopes of at least taking a point. Perhaps that will be their biggest positive from the game, having extended their scoring run to six straight matches.
In their last 14 matches, Millwall failed to score just twice. Their defeat on Saturday ended a run of five consecutive wins in competitive action. The Lions completed the Championship as the best performing team in the final five games last season. Two clean sheets in their most recent away matches are all they have in the last 10 matches on the road.
