The Men’s Marathon at the 2024 Paris Olympic Games is set to take place on August 10 and marks the 30th time that this event will contested at the Summer Olympics. There are a number of returning stars to keep an eye on, as well as a few newcomers that could spring a surprise. Let’s get into the prediction. 

All three men who occupied the podium in Tokyo three years ago will be returning for this event. 

Headlining the race will be defending gold medalist Eliud Kipchoge, who is the champion of the last two Olympic Marathons and is looking to etch his name in history by becoming the first athlete to win three golds in this event. 

Kenya also have Benson Kipruto and Alexander Mutiso gunning for gold. Kenenisa Bekele, who held the world record in the 5,000 and 10,000 until 2020 will be Ethiopia’s main contender.

Keep an eye on Kipruto here. The Kenyan has had a remarkable last couple of years which included finishing second at the 2023 Chicago Marathon and a personal best of 2:02:16 at the Tokyo Marathon in March. 

Tokyo 2020 silver medalist Abdi Nageeye will also feature here and the Dutchman will be looking to deny the Kenyan the top step this year, while Belgian Bashir Abdi, third in 2020, is never far off and could spring a surprise on the two leading contenders. 

In terms of potential dark horses in the race we have Yaseen Abdalla, who is making his debut in the marathon after booking his entry to the competition via a universality spot. He is an NCAA national champion and holds the Sudanese record in the 3000 meters. Great Britain have three representatives in Emile Cairess, Mahamed Mahamed and Philip Sesemann.
