Newcastle and Swansea have both been struggling for a while but have shown some signs of improvement in recent weeks. United slid down the table and into the relegation zone but are up to 13th place after a run of seven points from four games. They beat Luton at home in the FA Cup last weekend and have only lost one of their last five league and cup matches. Even though they are 13th, Newcastle are only two points above the bottom three and after this game have to travel to Manchester City and then host Burnley. January hasn't seen a rush of new signings but they need some to avoid ending up in the bottom three. Home form has seen Newcastle end a run of five straight home league defeats with a draw against Brighton and that home cup win. Swansea City start the weekend bottom of the Premier League and four points from safety but only six behind Newcastle. They did get a league win at Watford but then lost at home to Spurs before a goalless draw at Wolves in the FA Cup. Away form is poor with seven straight defeats before that win at Watford. Goals are still a problem with none in the last two games and this match looks like a home win for Newcastle United.
