Newcastle United are having a bad start to the season and will be hoping to seize back control when they go out to host Southampton on Match Day 3 of the Premier League. The Magpies have lost their opening two league matches and find themselves 18th while Southampton are just one point to the better, at 13th. Newcastle United’s start got even more complicated with their elimination from the League Cup after losing to Burnley on post match penalties. They started the season strongly, against West Ham but twice lost the lead and in the end lost 4-2. They haven’t scored a goal since, while in their opening three matches, they’ve conceded two or more in two games. In their last five league matches, Newcastle have conceded 10 goals, but credit to them too, they’ve scored eight. In three of their last five league matches they’ve managed two or more goals but they have four wins in five meetings with Southampton. One man who will be in focus here is Joe Willock. He will play his first home league game since making his move permanent. He scored in each of his last four home games in the league last season as he wrapped up his loan stint on a high.

Southampton have been growing by the game since their opening loss to Everton and going into this clash, they managed their first win of the season in the League Cup. The Saints thrashed Newport County 8-0, with debutant Mohamed Elyounoussi scoring three. That was their first clean sheet of the season and while it was expected they’d win, their progress right from the Manchester United game is notable. In their last league game, Southampton held their own against Manchester United and even led for the better part of the game. They’ll want a repeat of that performance to improve on a run of four winless matches in the league. The Saints have conceded two or more goals in three of their last four league matches and have no clean sheet in five league games. Away from home, they have six straight losses in the league and out of the last 12, they’ve won one and lost 11.
