Holders Newcastle begin their EFL Cup defence when they take on Bradford City in the third round on Wednesday evening. Will the struggling Magpies be able to right the ship or will the in-form Bantams pull off a historic upset? Check out our match prediction below!
Newcastle ended the long 70-year-wait for silverware last season with a 2-1 win over Liverpool in the EFL Cup final. It’s been an eventful summer for Eddie Howe’s team, who were involved in a prolonged transfer saga with former star player Alexander Isak, who was on the scoresheet in the aforementioned final. While they were able to add reinforcements, the Magpies stumbled out of the gates with just one win in their first six.
Bradford City, meanwhile, find themselves in the opposite situation as they have stormed out of the blocks to shoot to the top of the League One standings. It’s been 13 years since Bradford City’s magical run to the final in this competition and since then, they have failed to make it past the third round.

Newcastle - Bradford City FC: Form Analysis
Newcastle come into this match off the back of a frustrating 0–0 away draw with Bournemouth. The Magpies perhaps suffered as a result of their 2-1 home loss to Barcelona in the Champions League just three days earlier, as the intensity and emotion of that match clearly took a toll on the squad.
Newcastle were poor on the day, and were lucky to walk away with a point. There are worrying signs for the hosts in terms of goal output, as they have now failed to find the net in three of their six matches. A matchup against League One side Bradford provides a perfect opportunity to get some goals on the board.
Newcastle’s total of 0.14 xG against Bournemouth was their second lowest amount in nearly four years.
It’s been a frustrating start for Eddie Howe’s team, as they have now managed just a single win from their six competitive fixtures.
Bradford have gotten off to a dream start in the 2025-26 campaign and find themselves atop the League One standings after nine games. A 3-1 away win over Cardiff at the weekend marked the team’s second victory in a row and their fifth from the last six overall.
Bradford already have two impressive scalps under their belts, knocking off Championship sides Stoke City and Blackburn in previous rounds, both on the road.

Newcastle & Bradford City FC Squad Analysis
Eddie Howe somewhat controversially left both Bruno Guimaraes and Joelinton on the bench in Sunday’s 0-0 draw with Bournemouth, failing to even use them as second half subs.
For Joelinton at least, Howe was erring on the side of caution due to a recent injury. As for Guimaraes, it appeared to be down to fatigue from the Barcelona match, which means we could see him restored to the starting 11 here.
Nick Pope put in a man-of-the-match performance against Bournemouth.
However, there’s a good chance that Aaron Ramsdale will make his Newcastle debut in goal here. Missing out for the hosts will be Fabian Schar, Jacob Ramsey, Yoane Wissa and potentially Joelinton.
Bradford come into this cup tie at full health and are expected to field a full-strength starting 11 as they seek a historic upset. The only possible absence could be midfielder Tommy Leigh, who was subbed off at half time in the team’s win over Cardiff on Saturday.
The danger man for the hosts will be Will Swan, who has gotten off to a flying start in the 2025-26 season. Swan has scored or assisted in eight of his last 10 outings for the visitors and lead the team in goal involvements with eight in 11 appearances.

Our Newcastle vs Bradford City FC Prediction
While Bradford have been performing well so far, a trip to St. James’ Park to take on Newcastle is a different beat entirely. The visitors have solid non penalty xG totals, but we’re expecting that average to take a considerable drop against a Newcastle team that has been tough to break down this season.
The Liverpool game aside, Newcastle matches this season have been tight and low-scoring. With Newcastle’s struggles on the attacking side, it’s realistic to think that they will win, but fail to put up 4+ goals. Our Newcastle vs Bradford City prediction: Newcastle win + under 4.5.
Newcastle vs Bradford City FC - Other Interesting Predictions
William Osula anytime goalscorer
There’s a good chance the Eddie Howe opts to rotate some of his attacking players here. That could see Danish striker William Osula given the opportunity to lead the line. The 22-year-old scored twice for Newcastle last season and has already found the net this year in the match against Liverpool. Wait to see the lineup confirmations before locking this one in though.
