Borussia Dortmund were second in the Bundesliga at the start of February, but a run of just two wins in twelve matches before last weekend (W2 D4 L6) almost extinguished their chances at Champions League qualification. A 4-0 win against Nurnberg on Saturday has pulled them back inside the top four, albeit on goal difference alone, so there’s still work to be done going into the final day. Gladbach coach Dieter Hecking, who will not manage the club after this season, would no doubt like to leave having achieved that much, and a goal for Thorgan Hazard over the weekend could reignite that spark for a late surge of form. Der BVB have been far from their best since a crushing 4-2 defeat at home to rivals Schalke at the end of April. Lucien Favre’s men have gone from six points ahead to two points behind Bayern in the title race since the half-way point of the season too, so they’re going to need some serious luck this weekend to lift the Bundesliga crown. Marco Reus’s return from suspension will no doubt inspire a title-winning performance against his former club, but if Bayern get even one point against Frankfurt, it could all be for nothing. This will also be goodbye for Chelsea-bound Christian Pulisic. Dortmund are the favourites at Borussia Park, but we don’t feel it’s as simple as that. Der BVB have had plenty of ups and downs on the road this season, and that’s ultimately where it’s gone wrong for them. Dortmund have won just three of their last nine away days in the Bundesliga (W3 D3 L3) and they travel to a typically home strong Gladbach side that still has something to play for – this isn’t a “nothing game” for either side. Gladbach’s home form has slipped as the season has gone – they recorded nine wins on the bounce there before their current seven-game winless run – but we’ve seen more positives than negatives from them over the past few weeks.
