Middlesbrough changed their manager during the summer after failing to make it into the promotion play-offs last season. Tony Pulis was replaced with Jonathan Woodgate but they are yet to win a league game this season. They nearly won their opening fixture as they drew 3-3 at Luton Town. They led in that game until the dying minutes of the match and missed a penalty. That draw was followed by a 1-0 home loss to Brentford. More misery followed as they were knocked out of the Carabao Cup by Crewe Alexandra. A third straight defeat occurred at the weekend as they lost 1-0 at Blackburn. That loss left them 21st in the table, a place above the relegation zone.

Wigan Athletic battled relegation for most of last season but had a strong finish and ended in 18th place, 12 points above the relegation zone. This season started with a 3-2 home win over Cardiff City but it's been a bit of a struggle since then. Their second game of the season saw them lose 3-0 away to Preston North End. Just like Middlesbrough, they were knocked out of the Carabao Cup losing 1-0 at home to Stoke City. The weekend didn't go well for them as they lost to Leeds United 2-0 at home with Patrick Bamford scoring both goals. Away form was a big problem for Wigan last season with 16 out of 23 league games lost. The tip here is for Boro to get their season kick-started with a home victory.
