This match followed their 1-1 draw with Montpellier last week and it looks as if the momentum that André Villas-Boas’ men was picking up has come to a steady halt. Marseille have generally put together very good attacking numbers with an xGA of 8.85 and eight goals scored so far but they have also conceded a lot of chances with their xGA of 8.22 being one of the league’s worse tallies. Marseille are unbeaten in their last four clashes with Rennes but they have won just one of these. Marseille have also won just two of their last six home matches which doesn’t exactly instil a lot of confidence.

This loss ended their three-match run of draws but in truth this defeat had been coming for a while as they had been putting together a string of poor performances with draws against Celtic and Brest. Rennes won their first three matches of the season but have generally been very poor at creating chances with them having the worst xG in the league with just 5.57 created after seven games.
