Marseille host Lyon in Ligue 1. Marseille showed a steely display last week to beat Lille 2-1. André Villas-Boas’ men have been incredibly inconsistent in recent weeks but this was one of les Olympiens’ better matches as they were bolstered by the return of Álvaro Gonzalez at centre-back which allowed young defender Boubacar Kamara to step into midfield and put in an incredible shift. These types of performance haven’t been coming on a regular enough basis for Marseille though as they have been on the wrong end of some poor results in recent weeks like their defeats to PSG (0-4) and Amiens (1-3). However, much of Marseille’s misfortune in recent weeks has come when they have been on the road, at the Stade Velodrome they have been much more impressive. They are unbeaten in their last five home games, scoring seven times and keeping two clean sheets. Over 70% of the chances they’ve conceded this season have come on the road and it will be this type of form that they’ll be eager to show against Lyon.

Marseille will have to deal with an in-form Lyon side though as les Gones are finally starting to find their feet under new manager Rudi García following a rough start. They beat Benfica 3-1 on Tuesday to make it three wins in a row with Memphis Depay looking particularly inspired, the Dutchman has scored five of his team’s nine goals in their last four matches. Lyon have been back to their fine attacking best in recent weeks with them being extremely convincing in the Champions League as well as domestically. They have created the second most chances of any Ligue 1 team in their last two matches. However, there are still cracks in this side as a leaky defence and awkward away record has remained consistent despite the new coach. Lyon have conceded five goals in the five games under García and even though two clean sheets have come in that time, they were against Dijon and Metz who go into game-week 13 sitting 16th and 19th respectively. In their two away games under García they have conceded three goals, adding to their pretty soggy form on the road of just two wins in their last seven trips. This fixture has had a recent history of excitement with three of the last five seeing both sides score and four of the last five containing over 2.5 goals. With both markets winning in three of Lyon’s last four games and in three of Marseille’s last five we’re going to back it in this match.
