Lyon threw away their final chance of finishing 2nd last week as they drew 2-2 with the current runners-up Lille. The draw wasn’t enough to close the gap and with six points in between them and Lille, the dream of 2nd place looks dead and buried. They still have a fight on their hands to secure 3rd place though as Saint-Étienne are snapping at their heels so wins are imperative for Lyon’s Champions League qualification hopes. Their attack has been in typical fine form recently with 26 goals in their last twelve games but Lyon have really struggled to keep it tight at the back with 23 goals conceded in that time. Bruno Genesio’s men have failed to fully flex their abilities against the likes of Dijon (1-3), Rennes (2-3) and Nantes (1-2) and as a result they go into the league’s final three games with no certain league place confirmed. Marseille will be looking to take advantage of the sorry situation at Lyon but they haven’t been much better as they are currently struggling to finish 5th. They sit level on points with 5th placed Montpellier but Marseille’s inferior goal difference sees them in 6th. The drew 1-1 with Strasbourg last week which extends this run of rather disappointing results. They have won just two of their last seven games and with the likes of Nantes (1-2) and Bordeaux (0-2) beating them in recent weeks, you can understand why fans are extremely unhappy with the club’s situation. Like Lyon, Marseille have also been very consistent on both ends of the pitch with their attackers in fine form, but they haven’t been repaid by the leaky backline. Marseille have scored ten goals in their last seven games, but they have also conceded twelve times over that period which has seen them drastically stagnate in the league.
