Seventh seed Marketa Vondrousova will begin her Madrid Open campaign with a second-round showdown with Shelby Rogers. The winner will then play Mirra Andreeva or Linda Noskova for a place in the fourth round. Marketa Vondrousova will hope this is the season she finally advances past the second round in Madrid. The Czech player has twice played in the main draw in Madrid and was last year defeated in this very round. She is coming off a run to the semi-finals in Stuttgart which is the highlight of her season. Vondrousova struggled with her form and fitness at the start of the year. She has compiled an 8-5 record with three of her wins coming in four outings on clay. She starts in Madrid having moved up one place to sixth in the live ranking.

Shelby Rogers is now one win away from equaling her best result here. The American produced a third-round finish in Madrid last season which was the first time she had advanced past the first round. Rogers is slowly getting back to full fitness after missing a huge chunk of last season with a knee injury. She has played just eight matches and has her record split down the middle. Two of her wins have come in three outings on clay, a surface she struggles on. Rogers, who dropped out of the world’s top 300 places due to her injury absence, won her first-round tie in straight sets. This was against Shuai Zhang, also playing with a protected ranking. Rogers dropped five games in the tie. Despite the win, the former world number 30 has dropped 42 places to 394th in the live ranking.
