It’s 20 years since Marin Cilic first played in the Monte Carlo Masters. This year sees him take on qualifier Alexander Shevchenko in round one. Time for our match prediction.

Cilic has reached the quarter-finals of this outdoor clay court tournament three times, but not since 2018. This is his first time playing in the principality since 2022. The 37-year-old is playing his first clay court tournament of the year.

He has won eight of his 14 hard court matches in 2026 with one semi-final reached.

Last year saw him achieve a 11-9 record on clay but he hasn’t won a match in the main draw of an ATP tournament on this surface since 202, though he missed 2023 and 2024.

Six of his last nine matches have seen a tie-break played with two a match on two occasions.

Alexander Shevchenko has won three of his four clay court matches this year. He had to win two qualifiers to reach the main draw. His second match saw him beat Roberto Bautista Agut 7-6 7-6.

He’s played at least one tie-break in six of his last eight completed matches. Twice he’s played a couple and one match saw three played.

We tip more than 0.5 tie-breaks to be played.
