Manchester United start their Premier League campaign with a home game against arch rivals Leeds United on Saturday. In the same fixture last season, United ripped Leeds open in a 6-2 win and buoyed with a 4-0 win over Everton in their final preseason game, the hosts will be very confident. Last season United had a slow start to the league and Ole Gunnar Solskjaer will hope for a better run this time. He has strengthened the team with the acquisition of Jadon Sancho from Borussia Dortmund and Raphael Varane from Real Madrid. Both new signings are however not likely to start, while Jesse Lingard, Alex Telles, Marcus Rashford and Dean Henderson are all ruled out. United didn’t have a particularly strong finish last season, winning just one of their final five matches but they’ve looked good in preseason, especially in attack. They played four preseason games, winning two and losing once but in all four, they scored two or more goals, while keeping just one clean sheet. The clean sheet in the 4-0 win over Everton is United’s only one in the last 12 matches.

Leeds United have brought in Junior Firpo from Barcelona but he remains a doubt for this game after struggling with injury in preseason. Diego Llorente and Jamie Shackleton are also fitness doubts for this game but Marcelo Bielsa has Rodrigo Moreno and Patrick Bamford available for selection. Leeds had a good start to their preseason activity, with a win and a draw before they slumped in the subsequent matches and head here winless in four matches. In their final preseason game, they drew 2-2 with Villarreal after suffering three straight losses. They have conceded two or more goals in each of the last four matches and have no clean sheet in seven. Credit to their attack though; Leeds have failed to score in just one of their last 10 matches and in those nine matches, they’ve scored two or more in seven.
