Manchester United begin the weekend in ninth place in the Premier League. They look to get back in winning ways as they host Aston Villa who moved up to 15th after beating Newcastle United on Monday. United suffered another humbling defeat in midweek as their team of fresh-faced youngsters found themselves on the wrong end of a 2-1 scoreline at Astana. They can take solace, however, in the fact that they still lead their Europa League group and that Ole Gunnar Solskjaer left the majority of his first team squad back in Manchester for the trip. That being said, their Premier League showing last weekend wasn’t much better. They were second best against Sheffield United for much of the game before an incredible seven minute spell saw them go from 2-0 down to 3-2 up. Of course, they then capitulated to let The Blades clinch a deserved equaliser. The 3-3 thriller in Sheffield is just the latest result in a rollercoaster of a season for Manchester United. They sit in 9th position after picking up a meagre 17 points from their opening 13 matches, although two wins in their last four league outings suggests that they could finally be finding their feet.

Aston Villa are another side showing a remarkable inconsistency. They beat Newcastle last time out, but the newly promoted club have lost over half their league outings so far and find themselves just four points above the drop zone. The Villains do have undoubted talent in their midst, as their 5-1 demolition of Norwich in October showed.However, there’s a distinct feeling that this team hasn’t quite gelled yet, and that is hampering their chances of pushing up the table. Aston Villa’s struggles are even more evident when they’re playing away from home. They have lost five of their six Premier League away days this term, and while Manchester United have been far from perfect at Old Trafford they have still won half of their league games there. What’s more, Man Utd have won 12 of their last 13 home Premier League games against Villa, so backing a home win here looks a great shout.
