Mamelodi Sundowns have an uphill task as they look to overturn a 2-0 deficit against Al Ahly in the CAF Champions League quarter finals. Sundowns host the return leg after falling in Egypt and the South African giants will be gunning for a first win in four continental outings. They lost their last home match, which was their last of Group B but then they had already secured qualification to the quarters. The former African champions were among the best starters in this competition, winning each of their opening four matches but relaxed thereafter. Going to this game they have no goal in three straight Champions League games. They conceded a 23rd minute goal in Egypt and while it seemed like it would be a slim win for Al Ahly, the African champions stung very late, with Salah Mohsen scoring in the 89th minute. Sundowns will be banking on a run of just one home loss in 23 Champions League games. That loss came at the hands of another North African team – Belouizdad.

Al Ahly played in Group A of the Champions League and finished second behind Simba SC of Tanzania. They lost on of their group games, to Simba, and that remains their only loss in 19 Champions League games. Their title defence is going well and the man in charge, Pitso Mosimane knows Sundowns well, having coached there before leaving for Al Ahly. The Egyptians have four wins in six away matches in the Champions League and while they have only one loss on the last nine, four are draws. Sundowns will need a 3-0 win to eliminate Al Ahly but will note that Al Ahly have conceded more than a goal in one of the last 12 away matches. Al Ahly did lose 5-0 here in 2019 but Mosimane was the engineer then. They have met four times after that and Al Ahly have won three, with the other ending in a draw.
