Maccabi Haifa pulled one of the biggest shocks in the second qualifying round of the UEFA Champions League in eliminating Greek giants Olympiakos. Now they have another tough one against Cypriot side Apollon, and they start the tie with a home match. The Israeli side had drawn their opening two games before thrashing Olympiakos 4-0 away from home, in their mo0st recent game. Maccabi Haifa’s win over Olympiakos is their first in the last five matches, preseason games included. They’ve failed to score twice in the five matches and four of their last five matches ended in under 2.5 goals.

For Apollon, this will be the first game of the season, and it hasn’t been quite rosy for them in preseason. In their three preseason matches, they failed to win any and failed to score in two, while in the third, they scored three but conceded three. Apollon are actually winless in their last four matches, starting from their last match of last season. Their scoring returns haven’t been great, having failed to score in three of the four matches. The inexperience in the Champions League is another factor they will be grappling with here. The last time they played a Champions League game was in 2006 and they didn’t win any of the two games against Cork City.
