LA Galaxy closed in on the leading pack in the Western Conference of the MLS with a 4-1 win over Portland Timbers in the last round of matches. Going to the 17th round of matches, they will host Real Salt Lake, hoping for another win that could send them second on the table. Ahead of this game, LA Galaxy have 28 points in third place, while seventh placed Salt Lake have 21 points. With a game in hand, LA Galaxy will be looking to move one point below leaders Seattle Sounders who are going through a tough period. If there’s an area that needs fixing at LA Galaxy, it is the defence; they have conceded 27 goals in 16 league matches. Only 12th placed Vancouver Whitecaps have been that porous in the Western Conference. In the last nine matches LA Galaxy have no clean sheet and in three of their last four, they’ve conceded two or more goals. They’ve however failed to score in just one of their last five matches but all of these five have produced over 2.5 goals.

Real Salt Lake have had a much better output defensively and heading to this game, they have three clean sheets in the last five. Those are however their only clean sheets in their last 11 matches but their scoring run has been encouraging of late. Ahead of this game they drew 0-0 with Houston Dynamo, in what happens to be the only match in the last five that they failed to score. In the earlier four they’ve scored two or more goals in three and four of their last five matches have produced over 2.5 goals. Their away form isn’t very impressive though, with just one win and two clean sheets in their last five matches on the road.
