The big news in French football this week has been on Lionel Messi signing for a Ligue 1 side. On the sidelines, Monaco secured a play-off spot in the Champions League and will be hoping to keep spirits high as they travel to Lorient for their second league game. Both Lorient and Monaco registered 1-1 draws in their opening matches and are already playing catch up in Ligue 1. Lorient lost a 52nd minute lead to Wahbi Khazri’s 70th minute penalty goal to draw with Saint-Etienne and will hope to do better on Match Day 2. While three points in the opening week would have been ideal, Lorient will still be glad they have an eight-match unbeaten run going to this game. They will however wish to improve on their scoring run, having failed to score more than a goal in the last four matches. They rarely fail to score though; it has happened only once in the last 10 – a 0-0 result in a friendly with Concarneau. Both sides have scored in six of their last 10 matches. Last season, in their final 10 home league games, Lorient posted eight wins, a draw and a loss.

Monaco have already played three competitive matches this season – two in the Champions League against Czech side Sparta Prague, which they won. They however have just one clean sheet in the three games but generally they are good scorers, and go to this game having hit the back of the net in each of their last five games. In three of the five, they’ve scored two or more goals and will be looking to build on their 3-1 win over Sparta Prague. They drew with Nantes in the opening league game, stretching their unbeaten run in the league to four matches but it is their away run in the league that they’ll wish for more. Monaco are unbeaten in their last five away Ligue 1 matches, with five clean sheets and four wins. They have one loss, one draw and eight wins in their last 10 away matches in Ligue 1.
