Liverpool have had an unconvincing run but with the season-end approaching, they need to get their best game and give a good final push for a top four place. Already deposed as champions of England, a top four place is all Liverpool can play for in the remaining five matches. Currently placed seventh with 54 points, Liverpool are set to host 15th placed Southampton, who have so far garnered 37 points. Liverpool are seven points below fourth placed Chelsea and are faced with the danger of missing even the Europa League next season. With 15 points to play for, they will remain hopeful but they have to improve on their recent performances. Their match against Manchester United last week was postponed after fan protests and Liverpool will be well rested going to this game. While they are unbeaten in their last five matches, Liverpool have drawn the last two against teams they should have beaten – Leeds United and Newcastle United. In both matches, they conceded in the final minutes to deny them six points. Their last two home matches have marked some improvement, with the team winning four points after having failed to get even one in their earlier six.

Southampton have had a poor campaign in the second half of the season. The team that at one point ascended to the summit of the league, now needs three points to secure their survival. They’ve gone on a run of four winless outings right before this game, losing three. In the Premier League, they have two wins in the last 16 matches. The Saints had a good game against Leicester City last time out as they eked out a 1-1 draw despite playing with a man down from the 11th minute. Jannik Vestergaard was sent off in the game and starts a two-match ban. In the last six league matches, Southampton have conceded two or more goals in five and have 12 losses in the last 16 league matches. Away from home, their only clean sheet in the last nine league matches was against the relegated Sheffield United and they’ve lost all the rest. In the last 10 away league matches, out of 30 points, Southampton have managed to secure four.
