Liverpool - Leeds: Form Analysis
Liverpool edged out Wolves 2-1 last weekend to make it four wins in a row in all competitions. In fact, the Reds are undefeated in their last seven matches in all competitions (W5, D2). This run has given them an advantage in the top-four race and a chance to stay in the hunt.
That victory over Wolves was their second in a row at this venue following a 2-0 win over Brighton. Although they lost here to Nottingham Forest at the end of November, Liverpool are a tough team to play at this venue.
Liverpool have won six of the last nine first matches of the year, playing at Anfield.
Leeds held Sunderland to a 1-1 away draw last weekend to make it a five-game sequence without a loss (W2, D3). The Whites have pulled themselves out of the relegation zone, thanks to this form, and will hope to keep pulling further away.
It’s their away form that needs improvement, as Leeds haven’t won any of their last six league trips (D2, L4). Their scoring form has improved, however, and Leeds have scored in each of their last four away league games.

Liverpool & Leeds Squad Analysis
Liverpool will be without Mohamed Salah, who’s with Egypt in the Africa Cup of Nations. Dominic Szoboszlai returns from suspension but may struggle to upstage Jeremie Frimpong, who impressed at right-back against the Wolves. Also missing are their long-term absentees, Joe Gomez and Alexander Isak.
The Reds will continue to line up in their 4-2-3-1 formation with Hugo Ekitike leading the line. He has eight goals and is Liverpool’s highest scorer in the league this season. Szoboszlai could feature on the right side of the midfield troika behind the striker.
Dominic Calvert-Lewin has scored in each of his last six games.
The former Everton striker has scored in the reverse fixture and will hope to impress against his former derby rivals! Leeds will be without Joe Rodon for this encounter, after he was injured against Sunderland. Also out for the Whites are Sean Longstaff and Dan James.
Leeds have traditionally played in a 3-5-2 formation this season and will continue in that system. That would see Calvert-Lewin partnered up front by Noah Okafor.

Liverpool are still not playing their best football, but four wins and two draws in their last six games brought them into top-four contention. The Reds have also improved at home and are looking to post three wins in a row at this venue.

Leeds are in line for a historic moment if they win here. They won 2-1 at Anfield in October 2022 but have never won consecutive league matches on visits to this venue.
That won’t be straightforward though, not least because of Liverpool’s record on New Year’s Day. The Reds have won five of their last six such games (D1), with their last defeat coming back in 2005.
Leeds, on the other hand, have won just one of their last six league games playing on New Year’s Day (D3, L2).
Coming to individual players, watch out for Cody Gakpo. The Dutch player scored in Liverpool’s first Premier League game of each of the last two calendar years. The last player to do so on three consecutive years was Ian Rush, back in 1985 to 1987.
