It has been a tough week for world club champions Chelsea, and the Blues will welcome a much more manageable game against Lincoln. These two face off in the third round of the League Cup, with the League One side playing host at the LNER Stadium. While Chelsea are starting their campaign in the competition, Lincoln have already come two rounds. We have a prediction for the match below.
Lincoln put themselves in the world champions’ firing line with wins against Harrogate Town and Burton Albion. This will mark the first-ever meeting between the two sides. The last time Lincoln City reached the fourth round in this competition was in the 2021/22 season.
Chelsea will for sure come into this game as the favorites. They won’t want to take chances as they desperately look to end a three-game winless run. Last season the Blues exited this competition at the fourth-round stage.

Lincoln City - Chelsea: Form Analysis
We have already seen shock results in this competition this season, and Lincoln City will want to walk the same route in this game. They carry into the match a 10-game undefeated run, cutting across all competitions.
In that run, they posted seven wins, having last lost a match at Wimbledon in August. Lincoln had a comfortable outing against Harrogate in Round 1, winning 3-1. The goal they conceded actually came deep in added time while Lincoln was leading 3-0.
Round 2 saw Lincoln overcome Burton 1-0 away from home, Ben House scoring the only goal after 89 minutes. Ahead of this game, Lincoln saw off former Premier League side Luton Town 3-1 in League One action.
While Lincoln City have packed up a 10-game unbeaten run, Chelsea are winless in three.
Chelsea have suffered against superior opposition in the past few days and will definitely take an opponent like Lincoln at the moment. Enzo Maresca’s side lost 2-1 to Manchester United in their Premier League meeting on Saturday.
It was an afternoon that everything went against them, from their keeper getting an early red card to injury to Cole Palmer and the result. That marked a third winless outing for Chelsea in all competitions.
This tournament has already seen top teams eliminated by presumably weaker opponents, and Chelsea will be wary about this. The fact that Maresca could send out fringe players for this game further places them in danger.

Lincoln City & Chelsea Squad Analysis
Lincoln will revel in this moment, facing one of the top teams not just in England but in the world. While their opponents are expected to rotate, the Imps have no reason to. We therefore expect to see James Collins once again leading the attack.
The 34-year-old gets his chance after his five goal contributions helped put the team third in the League One standings. With a 3.25 xG, the forward will definitely be a thorn to Chelsea’s much-changed backline.
Freddie Draper will be playing a support role in a two-pronged attack, and he will provide the option if speed is needed. The 21-year-old is on two goals and an assist in nine matches this season.
Lincoln haven't announced any injured or absent players, but Chelsea could miss up to five.
Chelsea will be expected to make almost wholesome changes to the team for this game. It seems impossible, however, that the Blues will be able to do without both or one of their midfield anchors – Moises Caicedo and Enzo Fernandez.
While Caicedo has played 90 minutes in each of their matches, Fernandez has been subbed off after 80 minutes twice. Combined, the two have five goal contributions this season.
Alejandro Garnacho is expected to start this game after staying on the bench over the weekend. Robert Sanchez’s red card against Manchester United means Filip Jorgensen will get his chance.

Our Lincoln City vs Chelsea Prediction
Whereas Chelsea will go into this game as the outright favorites, we don’t expect Lincoln City to fold. Lincoln have done well in recent matches and come here unbeaten in the last 10 outings. Their scoring form has been great, and that could extend here, especially as we expect a much-changed Chelsea.
The hosts are not expected to rotate players, so these two should operate almost at par. That’s why our prediction for Lincoln City v Chelsea is for both teams to score.
Lincoln City vs Chelsea - Other Interesting Predictions
Chelsea to win
The fact that the Chelsea manager is expected to rest his top players doesn’t mean the Blues relinquish their placing as favorites in this match. They will still be a strong unit and are expected to prevail here.
The visitors are known to be one of the sides with the best depth in the Premier League, and that will come to the fore here. It therefore means our second prediction is for Chelsea to win.
