RB Leipzig will be hoping to make a big step in their fight for the Bundesliga title this weekend when they play host to league leaders Bayern Munich. Four points separate the two sides, Leipzig at 57 points in second place and league leaders Bayern have 61. In December, the two sides met and Leipzig missed a great chance to close in on Bayern after twice letting their lead slip, to see the game end 3-3. While they still have the DFB Pokal to play for, Leipzig will most definitely want to put more focus in their league campaign. Their two losses in the last 12 matches have been in the Champions League and they head here unbeaten in eight Bundesliga matches. In those eight matches, they have seven wins and five clean sheets and have scored in 13 straight league games. Leipzig’s attacking and defensive departments have worked well, in the last five matches they’ve scored 11 and conceded just three. At home, Leipzig have done well; they’re unbeaten in the last five league matches, with four wins. In 13 league matches at home, they have 10 wins and just one loss. From a possible 39 points at home this season in Bundesliga, Leipzig have managed 32 points, posting a 77% winning rate at home. After drawing three straight matches with Bayern, a win for Leipzig will greatly boost their chances.

Bayern went to the international break having managed six straight wins and as action resumes, they have a big issue to deal with in the shape of striker Robert Lewandowski’s injury. The Poland international picked an injury in the game against Andorra during the break and is set to sit out this, and a few more games. The Pole will be missed, especially after having scored 10 times in Bayern’s last five matches but we don’t expect the Bavarians to lack quality to replace him. Canadian international Alphonso Davies is also unavailable as he serves suspension. While Bayern are the lead scorers in the league, with 78 goals, they will hope to address their defensive issues as they face this Leipzig side. The visitors have conceded 35 goals so far, which is the highest tally in the top three, while they have just one clean sheet in the last eight matches. In terms of attack, there’s really little fault to pick in the team; they’ve scored three or more goals in the last four league matches, and hit a total of 17 in the last five games. This is where the champions need someone to very quickly step in Lewandowski’s shoes. Away from home, they’ve managed four wins in five league matches, with three clean sheets therein. All of Bayern’s three losses in the league this season have come away from home and they’ll be hoping to avoid that as they visit a direct challenger for the title. They however have a healthy away run in the league, having won nine of 13 matches.
