La Vuelta - Stage 20 Predictions & Betting tips - La Vuelta

 by Matthew Newman |

The second-to-last stage of La Vuelta is the final foray into the mountains. This is where the race will be won or lost on the hardest stage of the tour, where only the strongest can be discussed in our prediction.

There will be a group of strong climbers who go away early on a break, but it will take a serious performance to hold off the GC riders who will be attacking one another hard for the podium places.

Jonas Vingegaard has a 44-second lead over Joao Almeida, so all he had to do is follow his main rival. Vingegaard has shown remarkable legs in La Vuelta after riding the Tour de France, so it will be down to his ego whether he attacks to claim the crown or just sits in.

It's Tom Pidcock who is in that final qualifying spot at present, with a gap of 39 seconds over Jai Hindley. The latter looked to have plenty in the legs on Stage 17, which was won by his teammate, Giulio Pellizzari, who sits fifth, 58 seconds ahead of Matthew Riccitello, his rival in the young riders jersey.

Felix Gall is a grinder in the mountains, lacking the quick attacks of some, but he is as powerful as any when he gets in a rhythm. He, along with Jaume Guardeno, could be interesting at bigger prices; the latter, in his first Grand Tour at the age of 22, has shown up well in the difficult stages, and nobody will be worried if he attacks, given he is over 26 minutes behind the leader.

La Vuelta - Stage 20 - La Vuelta prediction key points

  1. 165.6km have to be covered on Stage 20 of La Vuelta.
  2. Five categorised climbs get progressively harder as the stage wears on, ending with ‘Bola del Mundo’, with more than 4,200 vertical metres of climbing!
  3. Felix Gall is currently 5:24 behind Jonas Vingegaard in seventh place, so he won’t be regarded by any of those currently in the podium spots as a threat.
  4. Gall almost got away on one of the later stages of the Tour de France, but the fight at the top was not as close as this one, so he has more of a chance to slip away.

Our La Vuelta - Stage 20 - La Vuelta prediction

Jonas Vingegaard is the favourite with the bookmakers for the stage, but he doesn't need to win this. That is not to say that he won't, but he is short enough when he does not need to. The UAE team and Joao Almeida will have to do all the attacking, with a number of other riders all watching one another. It could be similar to Stage 17, where someone else can attack, and nobody follows. This is such a brutal final climb that it could be a grinder, so our La Vuelta Stage 20 prediction is Felix Gall each way in the hope that he slips away without being chased.
