The 10th season of the Indian Super League will kick-off with last season runners-up Bengaluru FC taking on Kerala Blasters. This match will be played at the Jawaharlal Nehru Stadium in Kochi on Thursday. Kerala finished fifth in the ISL season last year to qualify for the knockouts. What more, they played Bengaluru at that stage, losing 1-0 in the additional extra time. That Sunil Chhetri goal via a free-kick kicked up a lot of controversy with Kerala coach Ivan Vukomanovic walking out of the match. With new signings, the Blasters will look to make a mark and starting on a high against Bengaluru will be an icing on the cake. They played four friendlies during the off-season, losing the first two, but bouncing back to win the next two ahead of this curtain raiser.

Bengaluru played Jamshedpur in a friendly before the season and ended as 3-2 winners. They will be trying to do better than last season at the start, where they were pretty ordinary. Only a late season surge saw them reach the playoffs and then the final although they lost to Mohun Bagan Super Giant. For this season, Bengaluru have retained their coach Simon Grayson and have made a few changes to the squad. Roy Krishna has left the club while Curtis Main came in as his replacement.
