World number 52 Karolina Pliskova will face world number 45 Clara Burel in the first round of Strasbourg Open on Sunday. Karolina Pliskova has returned to the Internationaux de Strasbourg for a third time. She last played in this event two seasons ago where she produced a semi-final finish, her best result so far. The Czech, former world number one has in recent weeks struggled with her form. She has lost four of her last five fixtures, weakening her record to 13-7. Pliskova, who is playing in Strasbourg as a wildcard, was eliminated in the second round in Rouen in her last outing. Currently ranked 51st in the live ranking, Pliskova won the Transylvania Open in February to end a three-year wait for a tour title.

Clara Burel defeated Pliskova in their only meeting to date. This was last season at the US Open. She won in straight sets and will hope to rise to the occasion once again. The Frenchwoman produced a semi-final finish here last season, her best result in three appearances. Aside from defending the 110 points she won here last year, Burel is also seeking to end her current slump. The 23-year-old, who has compiled a shaky 12-12 record, has won just three times in her last 10 matches. Currently, on a two-match skid, Burel was defeated in the first round in Rome last time out. She has lost five times in eight matches on clay and has suffered first-round exits five times in 10 tour events. Despite her struggles, Burel has moved up two places to 43rd in the live ranking, a new career high. The winner of this second career meeting between the two will play Diane Parry or Elina Svitolina next.
