20th seed Dan Evans takes on Jiri Vesley in the first round of the US Open. Evans has only once made it past the third round of a Grand Slam. That was last year in this tournament but he has a tough draw being in the same section as Carlos Alcarez. The second round could be tough too with recent Cincinnati Masters champion Borna Coric the likely opponent. Evans is the world number 23 but was down in 40th place at the start of August. He's climbed up the rankings thanks to a quarter final in Washington and making it to the last four in the Montreal Masters with two wins over Taylor Fritz and beating Andrey Rublev. It didn't go quite so well in the Cincinnati Masters, losing in the last 64 to Filip Krajinovic, who he had beaten in Montreal. He's won one tournament this year, that was a grass court event held in Nottingham, England. His only previous match against Vesely was lost in straight sets. However, that was played five years ago and on clay.

Jiri Vesely is ranked 68th in the world but began the year in 83rd position. He also has a best of reaching the fourth round in a Grand Slam. Unlike Evans though, both of his fourth round apearances came at Wimbledon, the most recent in 2018. This year has seen him lose in the first round in Australia and France and get to the third round on his favoured grass courts of Wimbledon. Vesely has had a poor run of form of late. That's illustrated by a loss to the world 842 Aidan Mayo in a Challenger Tour event held last week in Granby, Canada. His last two losses have both been against players ranked outside the top 100. His last three tournaments have seen him fail to beat a player ranked above 183. All a bit of a come down for the player who made the final in Dubai and beat Novak Djokovic that week. Back Evans to get the win here.
