After their nightmare loss to Germany in the 2014 World Cup, Brazil had no problems winning the South American qualifying group to book their place in Russia. They only lost one of their 18 qualifiers winning the group by ten points. They are unbeaten in their last five games and have just one loss in their last 15 matches. Brazil have never lost to Japan winning nine and drawing two of their 11 games. Eight of their nine victories would have been winners on a -1 handicap selection. Japan are also on their way to Russia next year winning their group ahead of Saudi Arabia and Australia despite only winning one of their last three games. Their last game saw them draw 3-3 with Haiti despite taking a 2-0 lead and later being 3-2 down and having to rely on a 92nd minute Kagawa equalizer. They have only lost one of their last 11 away games and are unbeaten in their last four friendlies but conceding in all of them.
