by Daniel Ngulu in Tennis Predictions
Eighth seed Alexander Bublik begins his 2024 campaign in Adelaide with a first-round duel with lucky loser James McCabe. The winner will then advance to play either Rinky Hijikata or Daniel Evans in the second round. James McCabe lost his final qualifying match and will now be hoping to grab the second chance accorded to him with both hands. The Australian was defeated in straight sets by Arthur Rinderknech, receiving the same treatment he handed to alternate Mikalai Haliak. McCabe is making his Adelaide debut. He arrived here after being eliminated in Brisbane in the qualifying rounds. Advancing to the main draw has propelled him up 11 places to number 267 in the live ranking.
Alexander Bublik is back to the tour after a two-month break. He last took to the court in Metz back in November but suffered an early exit. The Kazakh finished 2023 with a losing record but despite this still managed to win two titles. He triumphed in Halle and Antwerp to win his second and third career tour titles. This allowed him to set a career-high ranking of world number 25. But his unimpressive end to the season saw him drop out of the top 30. He is currently ranked 31st in the world. Bublik hasn’t had a good runout on hard courts in recent campaigns. He has managed just eight wins on the surface in the last two seasons.
