With two World Cup qualifying group games remaining, Portugal are five points clear of their opponents. On Thursday the group leaders travel to Dublin to face third-placed Ireland who are struggling to make it into the play-offs. Here's our match prediction.
Portugal may lead the group by five points but are yet to clinch the one automatic qualifying spot available in this group. They nearly made it but were held to a 2-2 draw by Hungary in their last match. With a final home game against bottom-of-the-group Armenia to come, qualification looks inevitable.
It's a much more difficult task that faces Ireland. The hosts are a point behind second-placed Hungary who they travel to in their final qualifier next week. A recent home win over Armenia boosted their hopes of making it into the play-offs. However, a loss here and a win for Hungary over Armenia will end those hopes. Hungary play earlier in the day and their result will influence how Ireland approach this match.

Ireland - Portugal: Form Analysis
The summer saw Portugal win the Nations League. They look to end a successful year by securing their place in the 2026 World Cup Finals. But for a 91st minute equalizer by Hungary in their last qualifier, the Portuguese would already have done so.
They can't complain too much though as their previous qualifying match had seen them beat Ireland at home thanks to a 91st minute goal. They have won three of their four games in this group. Two away fixtures have seen them score eight goals.
Ireland are struggling to qualify.
It's do or die for Ireland in this World Cup qualifying match. They are six points behind leaders Portugal and just one adrift of second-placed Hungary. They travel to Hungary for their final group fixture but the battle for the play-off position will be over if Ireland lose and Hungary win this week.
Ireland have only won one of their group games and scored just four goals. They had gone five games without a win before beating Armenia 1-0 at home in October. Another win may well be needed here but they have gone five games without a win against Portugal.

If a game against Portugal wasn't difficult enough already, Ireland will be without Evan Ferguson for this qualifier. Ireland have only scored four goals in this group and three have come from Ferguson. That included the winner in their vital home win over Armenia.
