Inter Milan kick their Champions League campaign off with a home game against Borussia Monchengladbach on Wednesday night. The Italian side are competing in the group stage for the third season in a row. Despite the quality within their squad, they failed to make it to the knockout stages in either of the previous two campaigns. Gladbach, meanwhile, are playing in the group stage for the first time since 2016. They were dealt a tough hand when they were put in a group with not only Inter but also Real Madrid and Shakhtar Donetsk. Neither side has been in the best form in recent weeks. Inter are winless in two after tussling with Lazio and city rivals AC Milan, two of Serie A's strongest clubs. They are sixth in the table after four games. Gladbach have failed to win three of their opening four matches in the Bundesliga, a run of results that leaves them a disappointing 11th in the table. The only team of Champions League quality that they have played this season is Borussia Dortmund, that away game resulting in a 3-0 defeat. 

Inter will hope that their superior European experience at this level can give them the edge over Gladbach. The clubs have met four previously in European competition, all of which took place in the 1970s. Inter lost their last home match but won the previous five. In the Champions League, Inter have not made the most of home advantage, failing to win four of their last five games at the San Siro. Gladbach have won three of their last four matches away from home. In the Champions League, they won two of their last four games but the most recent of those took place in 2016. Inter won their last two home matches against German sides, Bayer Leverkusen and Dortmund, both games taking place last season. We think the Italian side will edge this one.
