The UEFA Women's European Championship 2025 gets underway on Wednesday with a clash between two Scandinavian rivals as Iceland Women take on Finland Women at the Stockhorn Arena in Thun, Switzerland. Iceland qualified for this summer's tournament by finishing second to Germany in Group A4, condemning Austria and Poland to the playoffs. They lost just once in qualifying and beat Germany 3-0 in the home game between the two. Finland finished fourth in Group A1 but qualified through the playoffs beating Montenegro 6-0 on aggregate and then Scotland 2-0 on aggregate to claim a place in the finals.
Both teams form in recent times has also been solid, if unspectacular. Iceland's sole defeats in their last seven games both came against France (2-0 and 3-2) and they have also drawn twice with Norway (0-0, 1-1) and Switzerland (0-0, 3-3) in that run. Their sole win came in their last warm-up game for this tournament, a 3-1 win against Serbia last week.
Finland's form is slightly more impressive with three wins in their last six, two draws and one defeat. That defeat came in their last warm up game, a 2-1 loss to a strong Netherlands team but prior to that they were unbeaten in the last five including draws with Serbia (1-1) and Belarus (0-0) as well as landing two wins over Hungary (1-0 and 3-0) and Belarus (3-0).
