This week sees the first round of action in the League Cup in England. On Wednesday, Hull City take on Sheffield Wednesday in an all-Championship opening round match. Who will our prediction favour in a very even contest between the hometown Tigers and the visiting Owls?
Having appointed Tim Walter during pre-season, Hull have had a real mix of results in pre-season. That has included some heavy defeats (4-0 at Doncaster, 5-1 against Fenerbahce), but also some impressive results (notably, a 2-2 draw with Fiorentina).
That culminated in Saturday’s opening-day 1-1 draw at home to Bristol City. Oscar Estupiñán scored a 91st-minute penalty to earn the Tigers a point. They now seek their first win of the season in the League Cup against a team that they beat 4-2 at home in the league last season.
However, Danny Röhl’s Sheffield Wednesday team look reinvigorated this season. Despite an unremarkable pre-season, they began strongly with a 4-0 win over Plymouth in a game the Owls dominated.
That win made it six competitive games unbeaten and four wins from four in the Championship. In those games, Wednesday scored 12 goals and conceded just one, although three of those games came at the tail end of last season.
It is still early in the season to judge both teams, but the data suggests this is a game which could well see chances at both ends of the field.
