Casper Ruud and Holger Rune, ranked fourth and sixth in the world, respectively, will face off in the quarter-finals of Roland Garros on Wednesday. The winner of this encounter will take on either Alexander Zverev or Tomas Martin Etcheverry in the semi-final. This marks the sixth meeting between these two, with Ruud leading the head-to-head standings 4-1, all on the clay. These two met in the exact same match in last year’s edition of Roland Garros, and the Norwegian came out on top en route to the final. He comes into this match following one of the hardest-fought straight-set wins in this year's competition over Nicolas Jarry which took over three hours. That followed wins over Elias Ymer, Giulio Zeppieri, and Zhizhen Zhang in the earlier rounds. He is now 15-5 on the clay. This will undoubtedly be Ruud’s toughest opponent in the tournament, having faced two opponents ranked outside the top 100 and two outside the top 30 in the previous rounds. The one loss that Ruud conceded to this opponent came in their last meeting in Rome just two weeks ago. Can he stop the Dane this time around?

After losing his first four matches against this opponent, Rune’s win in Rome a fortnight ago is a perfect indication of his improvement this year. The Dane got to the final of that tournament which was his third final appearance in his last four clay tournaments. He’s got one title under his belt for the year and holds a record of 16-3 on the clay. Rune came up against Francisco Cerundolo in the last round, and it’s fair to say that he was given more than a few scares by the Argentine. Cerundolo forced the Dane to a final set tiebreaker and, halfway through, looked like he could pull off arguably the biggest win of his career. However, Rune showed his class, winning the last four points to secure his spot in the last eight. Despite being second best for large parts in that match, Rune hung in, which is arguably his best trait and is what makes him a threat to overcome the Norwegian for a second time in this one.
