Currie Cup semi-final fever hits the Diamond City this weekend, with Griquas set to lock horns with the feisty Free State Cheetahs at the Suzuki Stadium on Saturday evening. The Peacock Blues and the Cheetahs finished second and third in the table, respectively, this season. Check out our match prediction below!
It’s sure to be a special and slightly emotional day for Griquas fans, as this is the first time they will be seeing their side host a Currie Cup semi-final in Kimberley in nearly two decades - the last was back in 1998 when the team lost to Western Province 27-11.
However, with just 160km separating these two sides, the Cheetahs will have plenty donning the famous Orange and White in the stands as they go in search of recapturing the trophy in South Africa’s oldest rugby tournament. The hosts are the pre-match favourites heading into this Northern Cape derby - let’s get into the key stats!

Suzuki Griquas - Cheetahs: Form Analysis
The Suzuki Griquas enjoyed an excellent group stage this season, as they stormed to the top of the leaderboard heading into the final week with five wins from their six matches.
Their momentum was halted abruptly last weekend, though, when they visited Ellis Park and received a 37-7 hiding by the Lions - a result that saw the Johannesburg side overtake them into first place.
However, the Peacock Blues will still have plenty of confidence coming into this fixture, thanks to their excellent home record this season of three wins in three. They also won each of those games by 9+ points.
Griquas last won the Currie Cup in 1970 as Griqualand West!
Meanwhile, after winning the Currie Cup in 2023, the Free State Cheetahs bowed out at this stage of the competition last season against the Lions. If they win this match, they could face the Lions at Ellis Park in this season’s final.
However, reaching the big stage will require the Cheetahs to bounce back from back-to-back losses in the past couple of weeks. Those defeats included a 40-10 drubbing by this opponent at home a fortnight ago and a 35-31 loss away to the Bulls last weekend.
The visitors have played three times on the road this season and lost twice, either side of a slender 7-5 victory over a second-string Sharks side in Durban last month.

Suzuki Griquas & Cheetahs Squad Analysis
Despite the margin of defeat last week, Pieter Bergh has only opted to make one change to his starting lineup for this match, with Cameron Hufke taking over from Conor Mahoney at fullback.
Mahoney is retained on the bench this weekend, where he will be joined by Tiaan Lange and IG Prinsloo, who are returning from injury and suspension, respectively. Gustav du Rand and Johan Louw drop out of the matchday 23.
George Whitehead struggled to make much of an impact against Western Province, but he has been the chief playmaker in this team all season and will have a big role to play in this match.
Whitehead is the leading points scorer in the Currie Cup this season!
In the opposite dugout, Francois Steyn has also shaken up his backline, with Michael Annies brought into the fullback position. Clayton Blommetjies moves into flyhalf to replace the injured Franco Smith.
Smith adds to an already lengthy absentee list for the visitors, which includes the likes of Carl Wegner, George Lourens, Ntokozo Makhaza, Ethan Wentzel and Louis van der Westhuizen.
Veteran Ali Mgijima is brought onto the bench as cover at fullback, while Victor Sekekete will once again captain the side from the second row.

Our Suzuki Griquas vs Cheetahs Prediction
Griquas have enjoyed an excellent resurgence this season and are worthy favourites in this match, but they have not featured in a high-stakes matchup like this in years, so there are bound to be some nerves running through the camp.
While the Cheetahs are the away side in this contest, they are expected to have plenty of support in Kimberley, and if they do lose this match, we feel it will not be by a huge margin. Our Griquas vs Free State Cheetahs prediction is Free State Cheetahs +9.5.
