Fourth-placed Ireland seek their first points of the 2024 European Championship qualifying campaign when they head to Athens to take on second-place Greece. Ireland put forward a commendable effort in their first qualifying match but would ultimately fall 1-0 at home to World Cup runners-up France. A win here for the Boys in Green would see them leapfrog the Netherlands for third-place in the table. Greece, of course, famously won the competition in 2004 in one of international football's greatest underdog stories. The Greeks (who will be in the play-offs due to Nations League results) claimed the three points in their first match of the qualifying campaign with a comfortable 3-0 away win over minnows Gibraltar. A win here for the Greeks would put them three points clear of the Dutch who suffered a heavy defeat to France in their opener.

Ireland's loss to France in the qualifying opener snapped a two game winning streak for Stephen Kelly's men. It was also the first time that the Irish had failed to find the back of the net in their last eight outings. Manager Gus Poyet will likely start with Atlanta United's Giorgos Giakoumakis to spearhead the Greek attacking line. The 28-year-old is in good form in the MLS with 10 goals in 14 appearances after making the switch from Celtic. Trabzonspor's Anastasios Bakasetas is in excellent form, scoring eight goals and chipping in five assists in 27 league appearances this season. The attack-minded midfielder has also been on an absolute tear when playing for Greece and will be their key man here. Bakasetas has registered six goals and two assists in his last 10 international matches since June of 2022. The player to watch in Greece's fabled defense is Konstantinos Mavropanos. The 25-year-old center back has made 59 league appearances for Stuttgart over the past two seasons, scoring six goals during that time.
All eyes will be on promising 18-year-old striker Evan Ferguson for the Irish. The Brighton product scored six goals for his club in 19 outings this season. Ferguson has four senior caps for his country and is already off and running with his first international goal despite his tender age. He'll likely be partnered by Swansea's Michael Obafemi in manager Stephen Kelly's 3-5-2 formation. Matt Doherty and James McClean will be responsible for creating the width in the key wingback roles.
