Sunday’s Group A action at the IIHF World Championship kicks off with Great Britain (19th seed) taking on the USA (2nd seed). The last two matches between Team GB and Team USA were decided by three goals each, and we are leaning toward a similar outcome here as our main prediction.
Great Britain returned to the Top Division this year, but their opening match of this year’s IIHF World Championship ended in a disappointing defeat, 5-2 against Austria on Saturday.
Team GB conceded three goals in the first period, but they pulled two back before the second. Liam Kirk was their biggest attacking threat against Austria, while David Clements also got on the scoresheet.
The Brits have now lost six of their last 10 matches in all competitions and have never beaten their upcoming opponents in the IIHF World Championship previously.
Meanwhile, the USA kicked off their title defence poorly, suffering a shocking 3-1 defeat to tournament co-hosts Switzerland on Friday afternoon at the Swiss Life Arena.
Alex Steeves scored Team USA’s only goal against the Swiss, while Howard Isaac recorded the most shots on goal (3). Joseph Woll ended with 16 saves from 19 shots on goal.
That defeat brought an end to the USA’s 14-match win streak in major competitions, which included gold at the Olympics and in last year’s edition of the World Championships.
