Great Britain will kick off their IIHF World Championship against Austria in Zurich on Saturday. Recent meetings between Team GB (19th seed) and Die Adler (12th seed) have been closely contested, and our prediction is that this match will be another tight encounter.
Great Britain secured promotion to the IIHF Top Division for the 2026 World Championship by winning gold at the 2025 Divisional I Group A tournament, beating Poland 3-0 on the final day.
Since then, though, Team GB have struggled for consistency, winning just two of their six games at the European Cup of Nations last year, one of which was an overtime victory against Ukraine.
The Brits played four preparation matches in the lead-up to this tournament, all against Italy, and split the results, two wins and two losses.
Meanwhile, Austria have become an increasingly dangerous opponent at World Championships. Since that famous victory over Canada in 2024, their speed and offensive transition game have improved significantly.
Die Adler reached the quarter-final of this competition last year before losing to Switzerland 6-0. They have played eight friendlies since the start of April, but have only managed two wins in this period.
Austria are the favourites in this one, but they did lose their last match against this opponent 4-2 in the 2024 edition of the World Championship.
