Stage 7 of the 2025 Giro d'Italia is the toughest so far. Four categorised climbs include a summit finish on the Cat One Monte Urano. The first stage for the climbers who we will concentrate on for our prediction.

The desire to get into the right breakaway could see this fragmented from the very start. It is the first day for the General Classification riders to lay down a marker as well which will make for a great watch..

Primoz Roglic is the favourite to win the Giro and he will be keen to show his strength early. A display of dominance on the opening day for climbers could put some serious doubts in the minds of his opponents.

His main market rival is Juan Ayuso. The 22-year-old Spanish rider has already made his mark this year as the outright winner of the Tirreno-Adriatico for all that this is tougher.

Britain's Adam Yates could fancy his chances on this sort of terrain. He is a teammate of Ayuso at UAE Team Emirates, however, so whether he is allowed to attack remains to be seen.

There are any number of potential breakaway riders who could sneak away to claim the win. Chief of them perhaps is Wout Poels who scored breakaway wins in both the Tour de France and Vuelta in 2023. This stage maps out similarly to some of his big wins.

There are 3500m of elevation to climb in Stage 7 across 168km.
Poels recently won the Tour of Turkey, his Stage 4 win gave him overall success, a stage that concluded with a climb as this stage does.
In 2023 the stage that Poels won in the Tour de France ended on Mont Blanc, a Cat One climb like Monte Urano.
A win for Poels would make him just the 113th rider in history to claim a stage on all three Grand Tours.

This is a stage where an early breakaway will be looking for success. The start of the race is at the bottom of the first climb of the day so this is going to be fireworks from the second the flag drops. The success or failure of the break lies in the hands of the Red Bull team. Team leader Primoz Roglic will want to make a statement on the first day of proper climbing.
